Tuesday, November 8, is the day we will choose our next President along with many of the people who represent us in government.
Parties and candidates are not direct representatives of God’s will and purposes. Our responsibility as citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven is to bring the expressed will of Heaven to earth in the matters of the kingdoms of the earth.
By our Biblically informed vote, we keep government focused on the things that most closely align with God’s purposes for it. Chuck Colson summarized the role of the government as follows:
At the most basic level, government’s job is to preserve order, do justice, and restrain evil. Modern governments, like ours, also provide for common defense and general public health and welfare.
It is our privilege and duty to either authorize or restrain government’s role in the various zones of society.
Proper Function of Government
John Stonestreet followed with:
When the government oversteps this role, the other important institutions in society—especially the church and the family—are squeezed out of their proper role. Citizens suffer as a result, because the government cannot do what the family and the church are designed to do.
We are Christians. We are also Americans. We are privileged to be able to speak into the government’s role in our lives. If we fail to do so, it will ultimately speak into ours.
Below are positions taken from both party platforms. Prior to sharing each position I have suggested a Biblically relevant thought to help assess the platform statements. Read these platform statements carefully, prayerfully, and thoughtfully. Consider any other scripture that comes to mind.
Finally, mark your agreement with the position that most closely agrees with the Biblical worldview. Which side received most of your marks of agreement? Vote for that party’s candidates. Their views and alliances most closely align with the Biblical Worldview. You can’t go wrong by agreeing with God.
Here I will list 5 key comparisons. Below are several more resources for a further dive into the comparison of party platforms on many additional issues that will impact our lives during the next administration.
5 Key Comparisons Between Party Platforms
NOTE: STATEMENTS TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM PARTY PLATFORMS – NO COMMENTS ADDED
ABORTION – SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE
Biblical Worldview: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb,” Psalm 139:13
Democratic Platform: “We believe…that every woman should have access to quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion…. We will continue to stand up to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood…. We will…seek to overturn federal and state laws and policies that impede a woman’s access to abortion, including by repealing the Hyde Amendment.”
Republican Platform: “We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to children before birth. American taxpayers should not be forced to fund abortion.”
Biblical Worldview: Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
Democratic Platform: “Democrats are unified in their strong belief that every student should be able to go to college debt-free, and working families should not have to pay any tuition to go to public colleges and universities. We will also make community college free…Democrats oppose for-profit charter schools focused on making a profit off of public resources.”
Republican Platform: “We [declare] opposition to the imposition of national standards and assessments…. We support options for learning, including home-schooling… private or parochial schools, magnet schools, charter schools, online learning, and early-college high schools. We renew our call for replacing “family planning” programs for teens with sexual risk avoidance education that sets abstinence until marriage as the responsible and respected standard of behavior. ..choice-based, parent-driven accountability at every stage of schooling,…”
Biblical Worldview: To receive instruction in wise behavior, Righteousness, justice and equity; Proverbs 1:3
Democratic Platform: “We support a progressive vision of religious freedom that respects pluralism and rejects the misuse of religion to discriminate. …We reject attempts to impose a religious test to bar immigrants or refugees from entering the United States. It is un-American and runs counter to the founding principles of this country.…”
Republican Platform: “The Bill of Rights lists religious liberty, with its rights of conscience, as the first freedom to be protected. …protects the right of the people to practice their faith in their everyday lives. As George Washington taught, “religion and morality are indispensable supports” to a free society. Similarly, Thomas Jefferson declared that “No provision in our Constitution ought to be dearer to man than that which protects the rights of conscience against the enterprises of the civil authority.” Ongoing attempts to compel individuals, businesses, and institutions of faith to transgress their beliefs are part of a misguided effort to undermine religion and drive it from the public square. As a result, many charitable religious institutions that have demonstrated great success in helping the needy have been barred from receiving government grants and contracts.
Government officials threaten religious colleges and universities with massive fines and seek to control their personnel decisions. Places of worship …ave reason to fear the loss of tax-exempt status merely for espousing and practicing traditional religious beliefs…. We value the right of America’s religious leaders to preach, and Americans to speak freely, according to their faith. Republicans believe the federal government, specifically the IRS, is constitutionally prohibited from policing or censoring speech based on religious convictions or beliefs, and therefore we urge the repeal of the Johnson Amendment.
We support the right of the people to conduct their businesses in accordance with their religious beliefs …. We pledge to protect those business owners who have been subjected to hate campaigns, threats of violence, and other attempts to deny their civil rights.
We support the public display of the Ten Commandments as a reflection of our history and our country’s Judeo-Christian heritage and further affirm the rights of religious students to engage in voluntary prayer at public school events and to have equal access to school facilities. We assert the First Amendment right of freedom of association for religious, private, service, and youth organizations to set their own membership standards.”
Biblical Worldview: And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” Genesis 12:3
Democratic Platform: “We will continue to work toward a two state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict negotiated directly by the parties that guarantees Israel’s future as a secure and democratic Jewish state with recognized borders and provides the Palestinians with independence, sovereignty, and dignity. …We will always support Israel’s right to defend itself, including by retaining its qualitative military edge, and oppose any effort to delegitimize Israel. … While Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations, it should remain the capital of Israel, an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths.”
Republican Platform: “…it is the responsibility of our government to advance policies that reflect Americans’ strong desire for a relationship with no daylight between America and Israel…. We call for the American embassy to be moved [to Jerusalem] in fulfillment of U.S. law….[The GOP recognizes] Jerusalem as the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish state.”
Biblical Worldview: “And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Matthew 10:7-8
Democratic Platform: “We will keep fighting until the ACA’s [Obamacare] Medicaid expansion has been adopted in every state.”
Republican Platform: “Any honest agenda for improving healthcare must start with repeal of the…Affordable Care Act of 2010: Obamacare…. It must be removed and replaced with an approach based on genuine competition, patient choice, excellent care, wellness, and timely access to treatment. We support the ability of all organizations to provide, purchase, or enroll in healthcare coverage consistent with their religious, moral, or ethical convictions without discrimination or penalty.”
